The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2010 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Sheryl Kaller
Nominated for Best Director of a Play, Next Fall
“I was standing outside in my backyard while my husband watched the live stream of the announcements this morning, and I heard him start screaming. Then my phone rang and it was Barbara, one of our producers, and she was crying. This is not a bad way to start a morning, especially the day before my husband’s 50th birthday. It’s the best present ever. [Nominated playwright] Geoffrey Nauffts gave us this beautiful gift of a beautiful play that was only supposed to run off-Broadway for three weeks. Now, to be nominated together with him, after walking through fire together for the whole journey of the show—I’m humbled. To be nominated when I’m making my Broadway debut after taking off so much time to raise my children is extraordinary. And to be representing our show’s amazing ensemble cast? I’m speechless. I miss my dead parents at the moment! [Laughs.] And I’m certainly proud to show my daughters this can be done—that I did my job and was their mother. It’s a pretty good day.”
